Jason’s Story: Strength in Community, Hope in Family
For Jason, life with epilepsy has been a journey of resilience, self-discovery, and purpose. Diagnosed in adulthood, he faced an uncertain road filled with challenges, but also profound moments of clarity. Epilepsy, in many ways, reshaped his life, but it never defined him. Instead, it became the foundation for a mission greater than himself—a mission to support others facing similar struggles.
Jason’s journey was not without obstacles. Navigating employment, social stigmas, and the unpredictability of seizures weighed heavily on his shoulders. Yet, through the difficulties, he found strength in the love of his family. "I forgot to state how much of a positive driving force my kids and family have been," Jason reflects. "They motivate me to be my best me and provide what feels like a limitless well of energy, inspiration, and kindness. One dip of the ladle, and I come back filled to the brim with hope."
It was this unwavering love and support that fueled Jason’s commitment to not only managing his own epilepsy but also helping others find hope in their own journeys. Volunteering at Epilepsy Ottawa became his outlet—a place where he could turn his lived experiences into a source of strength for others. Through advocacy, outreach, and peer support, Jason discovered the transformative power of community.
"After participating in my first UPLIFT program, I realized why I wanted to pursue more groups. It is because of the normalization effect," Jason shares. "That’s when I also came upon this ideology, which I adopted and adapted from Malcolm X, that truly resonates with me: ‘We don't know or have all the answers, but WE are redefining ourselves together by swapping the I of our ILLness with two letters and creating our own WELLness. We can do this.’"
Each conversation he had, each hand he extended to someone newly diagnosed, reinforced his belief that no one should have to face epilepsy alone. "When I see someone struggling, I remember my own early days with epilepsy. If I can offer them even a moment of comfort or understanding, then I know I’m making a difference."
Through his involvement with Epilepsy Ottawa, Jason’s perspective on his condition shifted. Epilepsy was no longer a barrier—it was a bridge, connecting him with people, purpose, and personal growth. The challenges he once faced alone became shared experiences, creating bonds that uplifted and inspired. "Volunteering has given me as much as I’ve given to others. It’s a two-way street of healing, learning, and growing together."
Today, Jason continues to be a beacon of hope in the epilepsy community. His story is a testament to the power of resilience, the impact of giving back, and the profound influence of family. With every moment spent advocating, supporting, and uplifting others, he proves that strength is not measured by what we endure, but by how we rise, and who we lift up along the way.
